My dear Alumnae and Alumni,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to share with you the unanimous
decision of the AMASC President's team that the AMASC Congress
in April 2006 is cancelled.
You have been so overwhelmingly supportive in the years we prepared
for this Congress and especially since Hurricane Katrina devastated
our area. While New Orleans is recovering and will rise again,
it currently is not safe or functional. The New Orleans Fairmont
Hotel recently cancelled our reservations, adding that all conventions
to be held there in 2006 are cancelled.
Please know that all registrations received will be refunded when
Crescent City Consultants is fully functioning.
Conforming to the Constitution of AMASC, Article 9, section 9.2,
Meetings Notice, we will have in April 2006 a meeting of the "General
Assembly," consisting of the current and nominated President's
Team, i.e., the President, Vice-President, Secretary-General,
Treasurer-General, Religious Councillor, and Archivist; the current
and nominated Administrative Councillors; National Presidents
(who are the voting members); and our Emeritus Members.
This small meeting of 50-70 international alumnae/i will be held
April 22 - 24, 2006 at a site in the United States soon to be
finalized. We sincerely thank the alumnae/i associations and heads
of school who have offered to host this meeting. Please make sure
all American alums understand this meeting is for AMASC officers
and voting members only.
It is hard to convey to you the extent of damage in our area.
Many who were key members of our congress planning group no longer
have homes. Much of the city is still without power. Many hospitals
are not operating. But we live in hope and faith and are strengthened
by love. Very particularly, the support of our Sacred Heart family
has touched us deeply. Thank you on behalf of all who worked so
hard to plan this congress for your understanding and continuing
prayers. May we all have the courage and generosity of our foundresses,
St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and St. Philippine Duchesne, to carry
on and to grow from this experience. Together, we continue on
our journey of the heart!
Love in the Sacred Heart,
Olga S. Rome
