"Superior General of the society of the Sacred Heart,
Clare Pratt, rscj for the General Council"

Kenya
03 Jan 08

There have been many expressions of concern about the situation in Kenya following the presidential elections. Reports mention violence in Nairobi (particularly in Kibera) and in the Eldoret area, where some of our communities are located. We want you to know that our sisters are gathered at the noviceship in Mbiko, Uganda for their Assembly/Chapter which began on Friday, December 28th.

The provincial of Uganda-Kenya, Ursula Bugembe, called Clare Pratt on Tuesday afternoon, January 1, to say that a postulant who was traveling to her community in Uganda was turned back at a roadblock, and has taken refuge in a church in the Eldoret area. Another church in the area has already been burned and a number have been killed or injured. Ursula's plea was to do whatever we could to mobilize international pressure to stop this violence.

We urge you to PRAY for this situation and to contact the Kenyan ambassador of your country to express our deep concern for this situation.
Messages exchanged:

Dear Ursula, Maria and all Sisters,
I feel so sorry; know that you all and your country are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Hermine

Dear Hermine,
Thank you for your love and concern for us. Keep praying that the Lord may touch the hearts of the violent and change their course of action. Love, Ursula.

Clare has been regular contact with Ursula Bugembe and at this time it seems all of the RSCJ are safe. Several of our Kenyan Sisters have heard that their families have lost everything in fires.Love,Donna

Dear Ursula,
We asked our alumnae/i to pray for all of you in Kenya by the AMASC website.
I really hope the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Madeleine Sophie will hear our prayers and guard all of you.
Personally I feel so powerless and sad about all, I have no words to express myself well, the only thing I can do is pray and embrace you all by email.
With my love and wishing you all courage, Hermine

I have asked our Board to notify their associations regarding this crisis in Kenya and to keep updated through the AMASC website. Today I will post messages on both the Guestbook and the Please Pray For links on AASH.net.
Barbara Lopiccolo will be addressing our Board on Tuesday on AMASC issues. We look forward to hearing the latest updates.
Meanwhile, know that we will hold Kenya, Sr. Ursula and all of our extended Sacred Heart family in our prayers.
Happy Trails, Marcie
