" AMASC News"

To all alumnae of the Sacred Heart!

Last year following the conference on climate change at the UN a couple of the RSCJ who attended the conference prepared a prayer/reflection based mainly on the preamble to the Earth Charter. RSCJs around the world have been invited to pray this prayer and we, the JPIC committee of the ANZ province of the Society of the Sacred Heart, would like to invite you to join us in making it a focus for the feast of the Sacred Heart.

Some may want to use it as it is for prayer or reflection, others may want to use it as a stimulus to prayer, or as a basis for a theme for the feast of the Sacred Heart liturgy, for prayers of the faithful; some may want to use it over a number of days by way of preparation for the feast.

Click here for the prayer and it is also available on the Society’s international website.

Different groups – schools, Associates, Madeleine Sophie programme, parishes, past students … will have their own preferred ways of responding. Afterwards you may like to
share your responses and experiences on this.

Pangea Day (http://www.pangeaday.org/)
From Tijuana to Tel Aviv and many points in between, join the worldwide Pangea Day, on May 10. The goal of Pangea Day, created by documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, is to use the power of film to enhance empathy, compassion, and peace among people of all nationalities. The program will feature a selection of short films -- fiction, nonfiction, and animation -- with many from filmmakers in disadvantaged areas and conflict zones. The live broadcast is offered free, and the signal will be sent through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.

Congratulations to St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center for winning Oprah’s Big Give – San Diego! <http://www.stmsc.org/>

10News, ABC and Oprah’s Big Give challenged San Diegans to make a difference in their community. In the spirit of this inspiring new show, $10,000 was given to one deserving local non-profit.

The five organizations had four weeks to raise a minimum of $10,000 to be eligible for a match, then viewers were allowed to vote for the qualifying non-profit they felt was most deserving.
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center received the most votes and the match. But ultimately, everyone involved won. Combined, the charities raised $90,611, in the competition.

For more than 41 years, St. Madeleine Sophie's Center (SMSC) a 501 (C) (3) non-denominational organization, has helped people with developmental disabilities, their families and communities, discover, explore, and nurture potential—giving thousands a chance to live life to the fullest. The Center truly provides a "Life Program" that allows students to learn and grow, and enjoy friendships throughout their lives. The five-acre campus in the foothills of El Cajon, California, and Sophie’s Gallery welcomes students daily to learn or upgrade marketable skills, develop creative outlets, earn some money, make new friends, and gain a sense of independence and self esteem. This Life Program includes recent high-school graduates to seniors in their 80s.

Sad announcement from
Maria Helena Pimenta de Mello
President of ANASC-BRASIL

It's with our deepest sorrow that ANASC-BRASIL has the most unpleasant duty to inform that SOnia Ballalainery has passed away.  She was our Vice-President and our dearest friend and collaborator.  We beseech the 'Sacré-Coeur family' to join us in prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, so that Sonia may rest in eternal peace under the loving care of Mater, her greatest devotion.

MDG #2: Achieving Universal Primary Education
In Millennium Development Goal # 2 world leaders pledged to “ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling” by 2015. Important as this goal is, it does not address the quality of education. The following two resources might be of interest to those interested in concrete actions in relation to education (for example by subscribing to news e-alerts, participating in e-discussions and/or consultations, or joining a global action week).
Education for All
UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - is the UN agency for education <http://www.unesco.org> and coordinates the international efforts to reach Education for All (EFA). Education for All is a global movement committed to provide quality basic education for all children, youth and adults.
For more information about EFA, see <http://portal.unesco.org/education/en/ev.php-URL_ID=46881&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html>
Each year, EFA publishes its Global Monitoring Report which assesses progress countries have made on their commitment to provide basic education for all by 2015. The 2007 Global Monitoring Report can be found at <http://portal.unesco.org/education/en/ev.php-URL_ID=49591&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html>
Global Campaign for Education
The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) was founded in 1999 and brings together major NGOs and teachers’ unions from around the world. In addition to the GCE principles, the web site mentions what actions the international community, governments in the South, the World Bank and governments in the North, as well as civil society organizations can take locally to implement the Education for All goals and strategies. For more information about the Global Campaign for Education, see <http://www.campaignforeducation.org> Here you can also find information about the Global Action Week which is held in April of each year.

plantPlant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has launched a new global tree planting campaign called Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign. Everybody, whether an individual, a family, school, church or other local community, along with businesses, industries, governments and/or civil society organizations, is invited to plant trees for the health and future of our planet earth. The goal is to plant at least one billion trees around the world in 2007. For more information see Billion Tree Campaign where you can also enter a pledge to plant. <http://www.unep.org/billiontreecampaign/>

Art Children
To commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (October 17) and the First Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (1997-2006), the United Nations invites children from around the world to participate in an art competition to design a Unites Nations stamp on the theme “We can end poverty”. Children between 5-15 years are eligible. The deadline to send in designs is 30 June 2007.

AMASC world members offer their condolences to the families and prayers to
  • Liz O'Neill who died in the Garuda plane crash in Indonesia graduated from Kincoppal-Rose Bay, Sydney in 1986. The oldest in the family,Mary, was educated at Stuartholme. Her mother is an alumna of our
school in Aberdeen (no longer exists) and of Craiglockhart College, Edinburgh. She worked with JRS for a time and in Hong Kong. In the Department of Foreign Affairs she rose to the position of Counsellor which was the position she occupied in Indonesia. Before that she served in Sydney, Canberra and Japan. She received an OAM for her services and the Australian Service Medal for her work in the Solomons. At a period between working in these different countries she did a year
of intensive language study. As was reported she did more for Australian-Indonesian relations that any visit of a Minister. This was partly due to her ability to speak the language and so communicate with the Indonesian people. Words which sum her up seem to be compassionate and a woman of great integrity. The 37-year-old Liz was wife to Wayne Adams and mother to nine-month-old Lucinda.
