Young AMASC Projects

EGYPT

 

NAME OF PROJECT:             Club d’Eté 

 

Goal:     Young alumni can go to Cairo, to help out during the summer school of the
             Sacred-Heart Cairo. The maximum length of stay will be 28 days, although
             personal travel time can off course extend the stay. Going for a shorter period
             is also possible.

Where: Cairo, Egypt.

 

When: During summer, June (exact datesTBA)

 

What:    Participant have to teach the pupils from the summer school something. This
             can be singing, dancing, swimming, theatre or any other skill they have and
             can transfer to the kids. Classes will be from 9am-2pm on Monday to Thursday.
             Afternoons, Friday and the weekends are off.

 

Volunteers: must have good knowledge of the English language, preferably speak
                   French as well. Though this latter is not a must. Volunteers must be
                   socially capable to talk with foreigners and work with children, they
                   must be responsible.


Kids:            The kids are aged 7-12 and speak French and Arabic. They do however
                    understand English

 

Housing: Participants might be housed in the school, at alumni or in a hostel

 

Costs:    Travel, insurance, eventually housing and food has to be paid by the
             participant. A small fee will be paid to them by the summer school organization
             (€ 60 for 4 weeks). Maybe the national organizations could pay part of the trip?

 

Travel:  On their time off, participants are free to travel. Egyptian alumni are willing to
             organize trips and help with big travel plans (booking cheap plain tickets in
             Egypt etc.). On your trips you might be able to stay with alumni instead of in a
             hotel.

 

Note:     Participants should have excellent health/travel insurance, since none in Egypt
             will be responsible if something might happen when traveling or if you get sick.
             Probably vaccinations will be needed to.


 

INDIA

 

NAME OF PROJECT:              India Sophia Centre project

 

Goal:     The goal of this project is to support, both financially as well as practically, the
             SOPHIA CENTRE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN
             in Patna, India. Young alumni of all national organizations will try to raise
             money to either give to the nuns that run the centre, so they can pay rent etc.
             or to pay for the trips of volunteers that will go there to help.

Where: Patna, Bihar, Patna

 

When: Somewhere during the school year: 27th of June until the 15th of May.

 

What: Members of Young AMASC are able to go to India to help out as a volunteer.
          They can teach all sorts of things, like music, computer lessons, English
          lessons and so on.


Volunteers: must have good knowledge of the English language, must be socially
                   capable to talk with foreigners, must be responsible, must be able to
                   work with children. Must be at minimum age of 18. It is preferable that
                   volunteers know how to teach creatively.


Students in School: Women and children between 4 and 24 years old.

 

Housing:     The volunteers will stay at the community of the sisters who work at the
                   Sophia Centre.

 

Costs: Travel, insurance, eventually housing and food has to be paid by the
             participant. For food and housing costs will be 0,75 eurocents a day.


Travel: On their time off, participants are free to travel, but it is safer to do this with
             someone and never alone.

 

Note: Volunteers must have excellent health/travel insurance, and vaccinations are needed. It is not recommended to go alone, bring a friend or we will try to find another volunteer.


INDIA

 

NAME OF PROJECT:              Sambhali Trust

 

Goal:    Jodhpur rests in western India surrounded by the Thar Desert, nomadic tribes, and poverty. Widows, abandoned wives, and women of the Dalit caste and other underprivileged communities are significantly affected by impoverishment, which combined with traditional gender roles, cultural and religious beliefs, and superstition prevents these women from earning an income and becoming financially self-sufficient.

 

Aim:     to help these women and girls to gain independence, self-esteem and unity  among each other through:

  • Teaching women new skills of textile–production: block printing, screen-printing, tie and dye and embroidery.      
  • Provide paid work with the help of Sambhali India and Durag Niwas Guesthouse
  • Provide safe and clean workshops
  • Provide basic human right education, health and hygiene education and information on the development in urban and rural areas
  • Personality development
  • Build confidence and self esteem
  • Socializing skills
  • English lessons (basic)
  • Health and hygiene lessons for their families and communities
  • Anti domestic violence information and information on women laws
  • AIDS/HIV awareness program
  • Keeping Indian traditional skills alive by teaching others

Where: In Jodhpur or in Setrawa village, 110 km west of Jodhpur.

When: During the year

 

What: Members of Young AMASC are able to go to India to help out as a volunteer.
            
Volunteers are requested to share with us their hobbies and interests before
they come to Jodhpur. We respect new ideas and advices and are open to any  information to make changes in the activities from the timetable to suite our volunteer and the participants. You are always welcome to come and visit our project if traveling through Jodhpur or Setrawa and are welcome to come and volunteer with us for some days, some weeks or some months. A Volunteering Certificate would only be given to volunteers working for 1 month or more. We also host guest volunteers for few weeks in between the volunteers time, they come over to share their ideas on different ways of teaching and sharing their knowledge on many related subjects: Art and Craft, Health and Hygiene, Gardening etc.

IN HOME COUNTRY

 

NAME OF PROJECT:
             Teaching your native language to immigrants or asylum seekers

 

 

Goal:     to teach the native language to foreigners. This will improve the chances of
             immigrants to function well in the community. They will be able to speak up
             and get help in case they get ill or are mistreated at their jobs/by other people.
             This is a project that can be set up by own initiative.


Where: native country of the volunteer

When: during the year.

What:    Teachers can set up small scale classes in their place, a café or even in a park,
             so there will be relatively low to almost no costs attached to this project. While
             participants will not only be confronted with the problems immigrants
             encounter but will also obtain better communication and people skills, a thing
             that will definitely come in handy in later live.


Volunteers: must have a good knowledge of the native language, must be socially capable to talk and work with foreigners.

Students: Immigrants of all ages

MEXICO


NAME OF PROJECT:                          Educación Popular IYOLOSIWA  A.C. 
                                                                  Programa San Luis Potosí


Goal:

Develop educational and organisational programmes for children (boys and girls), the young and women on the following themes:
Gender, human rights, citizenship, environment and cultural identity, so that they become people with discernment; responsible and active who can influence the policies in their communities.

 

Where:  San Luis Potosi.

 

Work: 
This will depend on the capabilities and the cv of the volunteers, in our experience, the areas in which they can participate are:

 

-            Children: Remedial and educational help, helping them to develop their
             capacity to reason and their imaginations in two schools and in the area of
            
education in the community.

-            Training lay people in the rural communities who belong to the Moctezuma
             parish.

-            Help the trainers in the community in their mission.

-            Complete education and training of the young adolescents.

 

Accommodation:  A family has made available a small apartment which gives a certain independence: 2 bedrooms, a small living room and bath room.  They can eat with the religious of the Sacred Heart once or twice a week.

 

Costs for the volunteers:  The volunteers pay for their board and lodging by means of a monthly payment of 1500 pesos to the host family, they take part in the daily life of the family.

 

Holidays and Travel:  Christmas is the only time during which the volunteers can leave, either to visit their families or to explore the country (depending on their nationality, financial situation etc).


 

MEXICO


NAME OF PROJECT:

Educación Popular IYOLOSIWA  A.C.
 Programa Ayutla de los Libres, Guerrero

 


Goal:            

The people involved in the different projects or activities involve or organise community places; make suggestions, discuss the problems, take charge of the project or the activity in which they are involved to improve the quality and the living conditions in their communities.

 

Within this programme there are 5 projects:

 

1.            care of the environment

2.            training and further development of the teachers

3.            health

4.            “Young missionaries” working with the young

5.            Ludotheque “learning to live together”, working
             with children.

 

 

Where:
The project is situated on the Costa Chica de Guerrero, the nearest towns are Acapulco on the coast and Chilpancingo (capital of Guerrero) in the interior.

 

When:
Two volunteering possibilities are offered: either a six months to a year’s commitment, or participating, during the first three weeks of July, in the summer educational camp.

 

Work:
The volunteers can help with:

  •  The activities appropriate to each project, according to the aptitudes and the
      knowledge of each volunteer, after the latter have been assessed by the team.
  • Above all in the activities with the young and the children, making educational
    materials, or other activities required by the projects in which they are taking part.

Accommodation:
We will suggest where they can live, either in a family (who will be helped by the volunteer contributing financially each month) or renting a room.

 

Costs for the volunteers: 
They will be fed and receive the necessary expenses which are necessary for the activities of the project in which they are taking part.  The cost of accommodation is the responsibility of each volunteer.

 

Travel/Holidays:
They may take a break during the breaks in the projects, generally at Christmas and during August.  If they wish they can stay at Ayutla and live with the families during the time when the team is away.



MEXICO            

 

 

NAME OF PROJECT:  LA GRANJA HOGAR CHIHUAHUA
                                           (
Home Farm CHIHUAHUA)

 


Goal:
The farm is an educational establishment.  By means of a home and a school, it offers children, boys and girls, and adolescents, a positive outlook on the future and a life with meaning and happiness.  It prepares them to be competent, discerning and involved in society.

 

Where: 
In the town of Chihuahua, in the North of the country.

 

When: 
This can be following different methods:

  • Volunteering full time.
  • Group visits full time.
  • Volontariat ponctuel
  • People who have to do their social service and training placements
  • Occasional visits from groups or individuals.

Whatever the situations, the length of the stay must be set out, and the job of the individual or the group in the institution must be allocated.  This will be communicated to the employees and to the children with whom this person or group will have dealings.  In this way, misunderstandings are avoided, above all for the children.  All the people involved will therefore know, from the start, how long the person or group from outside will stay at the Home Farm.

 

Work: 
The volunteers can assist:

 

In the mornings in the Primary School and in the Children’s Home

  • Support the Director Alma Rosa and help her in her tasks in the Primary
     section, for example: writing the reports, entering data on the computer,
      answering the telephone, welcoming visitors and directing them to the relevant
      people according to their requirements.
  • Supporting the primary school teachers.

 

Mornings and afternoons at the Home:

  • Help those in charge of the dormitories to get the children up, help the children
    to get ready for school, leave everything clean and tidy, with the help of the
    children chosen for this job.
  • Help with the laundry, fold the clothes and the laundry, tidy it away, and prepare the clothes for the children to wear.
  • Help in the study rooms (Ludostudio), help with one or the other in charge, help
    the children during break times, whether cultural or sporting as organised.
  • Help with those responsible for the cleaning and tidying of the various areas,
    for example the dining room, the study rooms, the bathrooms, and the outside
    play areas.
  • Help when the children and adolescents go to the dormitories.
  • Help the people in charge of Christian Social Training. 

Accommodation: 
The institution will take care of the board and lodging of the volunteers.

 

Costs for the volunteers: 
Travel costs to the Farm and their extra expenses during their stay.

 

Holidays and Travel:
It is possible to take a holiday when the children are absent either: two weeks at Christmas, two weeks at Easter, and the summer holidays (July and mid-August more or less).  During these times it is also possible to stay at the Farm and to accompany the summer groups, join the communities…

 


 

Poland

 

NAME OF PROJECT:             Pobiedziska project

 

 

Goal:    To teach the students at the school in Pobiedziska english. This is very
             important for them since Poland has now entered the European Union and
             speaking more than just Polish becomes more and more a necessity.

 

Where: Pobiedziska, Poland.

 

When: during the school year

What:   Volunteers can go to Pobiedziska for a certain amount of time (1 month) to talk
             English to the pupils so they can improve their foreign languages.

Volunteers: must have good knowledge of the English language, must be socially
                   capable to talk with foreigners.

Students in School: Vary in age, from 12 to 18 years old.

Housing: The school will provide housing and food, no costs attached.

Costs: travel expenses have to be paid by the participant.

Note: The stay has to be during the normal school year, it is not a vacation project.


 

Sri Lanka

 

NAME OF PROJECT:             Various projects of SOS MALTA

 

Goal:              To provide in humanitarian assistance for those in need

 

Where: Sri Lanka

 

When: During the year

 

What:    Working in different projects in Sri Lanka like summer camps, women’s’
             empowerment and so on. Volunteers mostly carry out duties in rural areas.

Volunteers: Screening of volunteers will take place and volunteers will be assigned
                         duties according to their skills and qualifications. Volunteers must
                         speak English.

Housing: Volunteers are offered accommodation with ground contacts.

Costs: travel expenses have to be paid by the participant.

Note: In cooperation with SOS Malta, so a variety of possibilities exist.

NAME OF PROJECT:             The Center for Ethics and Advocacy in Healthcare.

 

Goal:              

The Center for Ethics and Advocacy in Healthcare, community initiated and community based, exists to help people make wise decisions as they move through our present healthcare institutions. The Center affects a shift in decision-making authority so that individuals become part of their own healthcare decisions. The Center works towards changing public policy in our country's healthcare system and supports the extension of this work into the community through its programs.

The center provides in: education, individual counseling and mediation.

NAME OF PROJECT:             The Sprout Creek Farm.

 
Goal:    
Combining agriculture, education and the environment with experiential
             learning opportunities through programs for children and adults locally and
             throughout the US and specifically for the network of the Sacred Heart Schools.
             The Sprout Creek Farm  seeks through the life of this farm, to provide an
             environment where using the building blocks for positive action on a daily
             basis.

 

Where: Hudson Valley, New York State.

When: During the summer

 

What: work can be done in the kitchen department (during summer camp from mid-June to mid-August), in the market, the animal husbandry, teaching in the program, cheese making, etc.
